One of the highlights of the 4th Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Week celebration last August 10-11, 2010 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel was the Young Researchers' Poster Exhibit Contest bearing the theme "Local Solutions for Local Health Problems."
The poster exhibit aimed to showcase relevant and outstanding research findings which can contribute to the improvement of our people's health, give due recognition to deserving researchers, create public awareness of health technologies, and encourage information seeking behavior on the featured technologies.
Nine entries were included in the exhibit. Judges who screened the poster exhibit entries were Dr. John Donnie Ramos, Assistant Dean, College of Science of the University of Santo Tomas, Ms. Mona Lisa Mehoy, Corporate Pharmacist of Herbs and Nature Corporation and Dr. Ruby Ephraim Rubiano, Secretary General of AGHAM.
Third prize was awarded to Ms. Jessil Ann Pajar and Ms. Jing Bautista of MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology College of Science and Mathematics on their research entitled "he Effect of Bacillus thuringiensis Crystallyne Spore Components on Dengue and Filariasis Vectors Aedes aegypti Linn and Culex quinquefasciatus Say Larvae (Diptera: Culicidae)".
Second prize went to Dr. Verna Sanio, Dr. Maria Karen Capuz, Dr. Emmanuel Cruz and Mr. Jose Mallari of Manila Central University on their research entitled "In Vitro Study of Anti-Otomyctic Property of Essential Oil of Cymbopogon Citratus (Tanglad; Lemon Grass) compared with Clotrimazole Solution 1% as Control".
The First prize was given to Dr. Henry David Dimaano, Reina Ruby Caminade, Quarrataini Balocang, Asther May Belarmino, and Daniel Phillip Hernandez of MHAM College of Medicine Southwestern University on their research entitled "The Wound Healing Effects of Catharanthus roseus var. Alba (Periwinkle) Flower Extract versus 10% Povidone Iodine Solution on Healthy Wistar Rats A Controlled Clinical Trial"
Other finalists include: Mapping of Traditional Medicinal Plants in Pugo, La Union from Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University-South La Union Campos (DMMMSU-SLUC); The other side of oyster mushroom: its potential in treating aspergillosis in humans from Benguet State University; Larvicidal Effect of Varyin Concentrations of Adelfa (Nerium oleander) Leaf Aqueous Infusion on Aedes aegypti from Western Visayas State University College; Innovative Practice Based Residency Training in Family & Community Medicine: The Eastern Visaya Regional Medical Center Experience from Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center; Participatory Action Research to Support Community Efforts to Reverse and Reduce prevalent Health Risk Among Youths from WMSU Research Development and Evaluation Center; Implementation of Primary Health Care Program of Notre Dame of Jolo College from Notre Dame of Jolo College.
Posters were evaluated according to their S&T impact on health/quality of life, socio-economic benefits, and poster presentation.
