The three simultaneously held workshops featured topics in writing research article for scientific journals, writing policy briefs, and resource generation for health research. Stakeholders and regional representatives who were mostly doctors, researchers and professors, attended the interactive sessions.
Writing Research Article for Scientific Journals
The session on Writing Research Article for Scientific Journals had three lectures and a workshop facilitated by Dr. Dinah P. Nadera, Chair of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) Technical Panel on Journal Publishing.
The three lectures of the session included:
- Writing of Scientific Paper by Dr. Imelda Maribeth F. Garcia, Editor-in-Chief of the Filipino Family Physicians where the participants were given guidelines on how to write a quality scientific paper in which Dr. Garcia shared that a scientific paper is written to inform in a novel way that would be an interest to others and to put published information into a new context;
- University of the Philippines Manila (UPM) professor Dr. Mario R. Festin discussed the Techniques in Communicating Research Results. Stressing the fact that, “No paper gets published in the international journal,” he also presented the State of the Art of Publication in the country, sources of guides for scientific writing, guide for making a structured abstract and guides for making a scientific paper; and
- General Technical Writing Skills was tackled by Dr. Isagani R. Cruz, Executive Publisher of the De La Salle University (DLSU) Manila Academic Publications Office where he discussed the elementary rules of usage, the elementary principles of composition and an approach to style as well as the American Medical Association (AMA) Style in citing references.
The workshop in the afternoon was allotted for critiquing sample research outputs by the participants.
Writing Policy Briefs
Conducted by Ms. Jennifer P. T. Liguton, Director for Research Information of the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), the training on Writing Policy Briefs aimed to translate research results into policies and action.
Lectures in the morning provided the participants a better understanding about the core characteristics of policy writing. Ms. Liguton discussed the context of policy-relevant analysis, and writing and the structural elements of a policy paper/briefs.
In the afternoon, Ms. Liguton provided a sample study in which the participants were given ample time to prepare their drafted policy briefs.
Resource Generation for Health Research
The parallel session on Resource Generation for Health Research was held at the Suite Conference Room, with resource speaker Dr. Jaime Galvez-Tan, University of the Philippines Manila Professor and Chair of the PNHRS Committee on Resource Mobilization.
Lack in the approval of research grants, according to Dr. Tan, are due to poor quality proposals, the lack of the researcher's capacity to write a proposal as well as the researcher's limited knowledge of the local and international agencies that grant funds for health research. These agencies include multi-lateral organization, foreign government and governmental organizations, foreign government organizations, and Philippine funding organizations.
Aside from the lecture, he also included a mentoring session in the program.
