R1HRDC Revisits & Reassesses Their Needs

Last September 3, 2009, Region 1 Health Research & Development Consortium (R1HRDC) held a workshop regarding: Plan Assessment and Health Research Agenda Updating at the Gov. Justo O. Orros, Jr. Conference Hall, NEDA Region 1, City of San Fernando, La Union.

The workshop was divided into 2 parts. There was the Planning Proper in the morning, wherein the committees presented their achievements in the previous year. The participants did also performance assessments, performance evaluations, action and execution plans.

Dr. Leo Quitos, the R1HRDC Chair did the opening remarks and presented the objectives of the said activity:

(1)To review and discuss the accomplishments as well as challenges of the Management Committee (ManCom) as well as its subcommittees from July 2008 to June 2009.

(2)To review, discuss and approved the work plans (including estimated budgetary requirements) of the said committees for another year (July 2009 - June 2010).

(3)To be informed on the health status of the region including women, children and the elderly.

(4)To come up with strategic health research themes and to identify and prioritize researchable areas in the region for the next 6 years (2010-2015).

Furthermore, In the afternoon, the participants focused on the Identification of Strategic Research Themes and Priority Health Research Areas for 2010. The National Unified Health Research Agenda (NUHRA), the basis for the Department of Science & Technology - Philippine Council for Health Research & Development (DOST-PCHRD) funding resource was discussed by Dr. Quitos. He mentioned the 7 priority areas under NUHRA namely: Health Financing, Health Governance, Health Regulation, Health Service Delivery, Health Technology Development, Health Research Ethics and Health Information System. The first 4 are aligned with the Department of Health's Formula 1 while the remaining 3 fall to the thrust of the DOST.

In order to see where the region fits in the NUHRA, Dr. Jose Orosa presented the Regional Health Research Agenda, which were based on the criteria set by DOST - PCHRD. He categorized the health issues into 2 broad topics: biomedical and policy research packages.
