Doctors are often stereotyped for their bad handwriting. According to a study, this illegibility of doctors’ handwriting in medical prescriptions is often the cause of medication errors.

Proper writing of prescriptions involves a strict format which includes superscription, inscription, subscription, and transcription, the researchers of the study explained. Superscription refers to the date of prescriptions, Rx symbol, and details of patients, inscription to the name and amount of medicine, subscription to instructions to pharmacists, while transcription to other notes and directions for use.

Employees who are fond of working overtime (OT) or those with work hours longer than usual are more likely to have strokes, according to a review recently published in The Lancet journal.

Stroke is due to interruption of blood supply in the brain. According to the World Health Organization, adverse effects of stroke depend on the affected brain area, and severe cases could lead to death.

When preparing a poster presentation, how does a researcher ensure success in grabbing the attention of the audience and selling his/her ideas? At a training session for researchers, two noted scientists shared how it is done.

According to Dr. Jonel Saludes and Dr. Doralyn Dalisay, awardees of the Balik Scientist Program (BSP) of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), posters are widely used in the academic community and conferences to publicize research results and to generate further discussions.

t is not about making yourself look good; it is about making the message clear. So emphasized two Balik Scientist Program (BSP) awardees during the “Training on Effective Oral and Poster Presentation” on 27-28 October 2015 at the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

Effective oral presentation revolves around four criteria, namely: content, clarity and organization, style and delivery, and expertise, according to BSP awardees Dr. Jonel Saludes and Dr. Doralyn Dalisay.

During the rainy season when floods are very common, one should be extra cautious of the health risks brought by flooding.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), flooding or “baha” can increase the prevalence of communicable diseases which can be water or vector-borne.

WHO explains that water-borne diseases such as typhoid fever, cholera, and leptospirosis are brought by water contamination, the major risk factor associated with flooding. The incidents of vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, and yellow fever, on the other hand, increases due to standing water that serves as breeding sites for mosquitoes.
