Review suggests coffee and tea drinkers might have a lower risk of developing cardiac arrhythmias. Drinking coffee and tea every day may actually benefit people with heart troubles. New research has linked caffeine consumption from the two popular drinks to decreased rates of arrhythmias, or abnormal heart rhythms.

But the researchers warn against the consumption of energy drinks that contain high levels of caffeine for anyone with a pre-existing heart condition.

Arrhythmias cause the heart to beat too fast, slow or unevenly. Many clinicians advise patients with atrial or ventricular arrhythmias to avoid caffeinated beverages.

“There is a public perception, often based on anecdotal experience, that caffeine is a common acute trigger for heart rhythm problems,” said Dr. Peter Kistler, director of electrophysiology at Alfred hospital and Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute. “Our extensive review of the medical literature suggests this is not the case.”

Researchers reviewed 11 major international studies involving 360,000 people and found caffeine had no effect on ventricular arrhythmias.

The analysis suggests caffeine intake of up to 300 milligrams a day may be safe for patients with arrhythmias. This equates to roughly three cups of coffee.

But there may be individual differences in susceptibility to the effects of caffeine on the factors which trigger arrhythmias in some, the researchers noted.

“Caffeinated beverages such as coffee and tea may have long-term anti-arrhythmic properties mediated by antioxidant effects and antagonism of adenosine,” Kistler said. “In numerous population-based studies, patients who regularly consume coffee and tea at moderate levels have a lower lifetime risk of developing heart rhythm problems and possibly improved survival.”

The study is published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

The Central Visayas Consortium for Health Research and Development (CVCHRD) is invites proposals for the 3rd Annual Central Visayas Health Research and Innovation Conference. With the theme, "Research and Innovations: Linking Theory and Practice," the event will be on 7-9 May 2018 at Cebu Normal University, Osmeña Blvd., cor. R. Landon St., Cebu City. Each institution may submit a maximum of three (3) research papers for each entry: (1) Professional Podium Presentation, (2) Student Undergraduate Podium Presentation, (3) Professional Poster Exhibit, and (4) Student Undergraduate Poster Exhibit. The full copy of the guidelines can be downloaded here.

Every year, CVCHRD brings together health R&D stakeholders in the region to share information and address mutual challenges.

To help the members and potential members of the Research Ethics Committee (REC) understand the basic principles in research ethics, the Health Research and Development Consortium Region IV-A (HRDCR IV-A) Committee on Ethics headed by Dr. Anacleta Valdez conducted the Basic Research Ethics Training (BRET) on March 21-22, 2018 at The Lake Hotel, Tagaytay City, Cavite.

The activity specifically aimed to perform the following:

1. To dialogue and guide participants regarding the moral dimensions of research.

2. To help participants conduct or review ethical research

3. To sensitize participants regarding basic research ethics concepts

4. To help participants apply these ethical concepts: avoid, recognize, correct ethical issues

5. To describe to participants the different controls for research ethics, focusing on the Research Ethics Committees (RECs) and the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB).

6. To motivate participants to do and advocate quality ethical research.

The speakers of this two-day activity were Dr. Rhodora Estacio and Dr. Angelica Francisco from the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB). It was attended by 28 representatives from HRDCR IV-A member-institutions.

The Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB), the duly created board that oversees the establishment and management of Research Ethics Committees in the country, recently conducted an Accreditation Training with the Regional Ethics Monitoring Board (REMB) Region XI. The accreditation training was headed by Dr. Marita VT. Reyes and Dr. Milagros M. Viacrucis last April 12 and 13, 2018 at the Grand Regal Hotel, Davao City. One of the main objectives of the training is to capacitate the REMB XI members as well as selected participants to become future accreditors in the region.

The Chairperson of REMB XI, Dr. Alvin S. Concha, welcomed the participants and trainers and briefly described the creation of the REMB in the region. Through DOST Special Order No. 248 s.2017, three regions, including Davao Region, were selected as pilot sites in the creation of REMB to support the tasks of PHREB.

There were three institutions who applied for PHREB accreditation and were comprehensively evaluated following the accreditation process of PHREB. In the future, the trainees may apply their learning experiences to their respective Research Ethics Committees to improve its operation and activities.

With the general objective of capacitating regional researchers to create quality researches for funding and publication, the ‘Bicol HeaRT’ is a modular training program for researchers which involve technical writing, research methods, statistical analysis and sampling.

It is also the goal of the training program to refresh the knowledge and improve competence in writing researches. The program also aims to equip the participants with materials and provide a venue and technical assistance in creating quality research proposals.

The training program participants consisted of researchers and representatives from BCHRD member-agencies, along with non-consortium members who have applied for the scholarship program and were chosen to undergo the series of trainings and workshops. The program also involved the consortium Director, Chair and their project staff, the PCHRD Regional Program Officer, and the invited speakers.

The training program spanned from November 8, 2017 to April 03, 2018. The program culminated with the said Commencement Program for those who have completed the training at Hotel Venecia in Legazpi City.

The ceremony began with Michael V. Montealegre, BCHRD Director and proponent of the program, welcoming the participants in his opening message.

Dr. Arnulfo M. Mascarinas, SUC President of Bicol University and Chair of the BCHRD, was also present during the ceremony as keynote speaker. During the event, an audio-visual presentation highlighting the experiences of the Bicol HeaRT scholars was presented right before the awarding of certificates to the graduates.

The ceremony formally concluded with Dr. Jensy Ong, Medical Officer of Bicol Medical Center (BMC) and R&D Vice-Chair of BCHRD, delivering the closing remarks.
