DOST S&T NOOK TURNOVER. Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Fortunato de la Peña turns over DOST's science and technology (S&T) nook to Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez during the "Innovation Partners: DTI and DOST" event held at the 3M Philippines Office in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig on Thursday (April 5, 2018). The S&T kiosk contains promotional materials on DOST knowledge products and services, which will help synchronize DOST and DTI efforts in promoting and marketing S&T products in the market. The Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) in cooperation with Region 1 Health Research and Development Consortium (R1HRDC) successfully conducted the Phase II on the Capacity Enhancement on Health Research in Disaster Risk Reduction Management-Development of a Research Proposal, held at Pamulinawen Hotel, San Nicolas Ilocos Norte on March 6-8, 2018. Same participants for this event also participated the Phase I held on January 23-24,2018.

The 3-day seminar and workshop evolved on the development of the participants' capacity on the generation,translation and utilizing research findings for disaster risk reduction policies,programs and services using standard concepts, methods and frameworks. The event was led by Dr. Ofelia Saniel, Dr. Ophelia Mendoza, Dr. Juan Ma. Pablo R. Nanagas and Dr. Miguel Manuel Dorotan as speakers tackled topics based on their expertise. Dr. Saniel taught on the: Identification and Objective Setting;Descriptive Study Design;Analytic Study Designs; and Writing Research Proposals. Dr. Mendoza also imparted her knowledge on different topics like: Sampling designs; Sample size determination; Qualitative studies; Data collection methods and tools; Data Analysis; and preparation of budget and work plan. Dr. Nanagas talked about the Ethical concerns in DRRM research while Dr. Dorotan acted as one of the mentors/consultants during the workshops and plenary sessions.

The participants are expected to finish and submit their full blown research proposals as a product of these series of seminars, during the Phase III which will be scheduled sometime in April.

The Cordillera Regional Health Research and Development Consortium (CRHRDC) conducted a Researchers’ Orientation on Proposal Development on March 20, 2018, at the CS-AVR, University of the Philippines Baguio City. This activity was spearheaded by the Research Management Committee (RMC), in collaboration with the Capability Building Committee (CBC) and Research Ethics Committee (REC).

A total number of 32 researchers from the different member institutions attended the said activity. The orientation focused mainly on the discussion of the documentary requirements, processes, and guidelines related to the Regional Research Fund (RRF) Mechanism. Dr. Annie Ekid (Chair, Research Management Committee) discussed the Regional Unified Health Research Agenda (RUHRA), a list of health research priorities which shall serve as the basis of the participants in coming up with research proposals. Likewise, Ms. Marian Sanchez and Prof. Celia Austria discussed the technical guidelines and ethical guidelines, respectively. The guidelines on the Line-item Budget Preparation was presented by Mr. Jake Olsim.

In the afternoon, the participants had a short workshop to identify topics and generate possible titles of their research interests. The workshop served as an opportunity for interdisciplinary, interagency collaboration among the researchers having similar research interests.

The conducted orientation is a preliminary activity in preparation for the upcoming writeshop series which will be conducted in April and May. Hence, the facilitators encouraged the participants to develop their identified research topics into capsule proposals for presentation and evaluation.

The presentation is divided into two parallel session, the proposal under the MNCHN and for the Non Communicable Disease, SDN, Health Promotion, Communicable Diseases.

The Parallel Session I (Maternal, Newborn, Child Health & Nutrition) was evaluated by Dr. Rita Mae Ang-Bon (MO IV, Family Cluster Head), Mr. Dave Isidore Plopiňo (Nurse V, Family Planning Coordinator) and Dr. Jensy Ong (R&D Vice-Chair, BCHRD) and the Parallel Session II ( Non-Communicable Diseases, SDN, Health Promotion, Communicable Diseases) was evaluated by Dr. Evy Sarmiento (MO IV, Non-communicable cluster head), Ms. Windalyn Baluis (Nurse V, Healthy Lifestyle Coordinator), Ms. Maita Mortega (Nurse III, SDN Coordinator), Ms. Myrna Rayala (SHPO, BHW Coordinator), Mr. Arnel Santiago (AA III, HOMIS Coordinator), Dr. Ma. Pamela Viñas (Education Supervisor, CHEDRO V), Aida Ruby Jeremias (Nurse V, TB- Coordinator), and Lilian Rose Contesa Encisa (SHPO, TB-HIV Coordinator). Most of the evaluators came from the program managers of Department of Health CHD-Bicol.

A total of 14 proposals was presented during the event. These researcher who presented their proposal was also the BCHRD Scholars for Bicol Heart Program, which help them on formuating and producing a quality and scientific sound proposal. Expecting that some of them will bagged their hard earned effort and time for their research proposal to be funded.

Before the formal strategic and operations plan started, representative from the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) through Mr. Nico Parungao presented the opportunites and announcement from the PCHRD.

Ms. Jean Cardino and Atty. Christian Rivero, from the Commission on Higher Education facilitated the planning. The group was divided accordingly to their designated committee. Each group worked harmoniously on their targets, plans and also the operations plan for 2018-2022. At the end of the event, each member has now its target tasks and plans for 2018. BCHRD continue its legacy to commit for people. A Major! Major! changed has come!

Eastern Samar, March 1, 2018 - The College of Nursing of the Eastern Samar State University-Main Campus conducted its 3rd Health Research In-House Review last February 28, 2018 at the College’ Audio Visual Room.

The activity commenced with the words of welcome delivered by the College’ Dean, Dr. Flores B. Sta. Cruz, which was followed by an inspirational message of the Director of the R&D Services, Dr. Grace O. Manlapas.

The activity was highlighted with the presentation of five research proposals to wit:

1. Extent of Utilization of Basic Health and Social Services Among Elderly in Eastern Samar
2. Lived Experiences of a Family Caregiver: A Phenomenology
3. Knowledge, Attitude and Practices on Schistosomiasis Prevention in Barangay Siha, Borongan City
4. Compliance to Newborn Screening in Borongan City
5. Basic Emergency Obstetrics Management Preparedness during Disaster: An Input to a Disaster Health Management Plan.

The panel of evaluators during the proposal review were Prof. Neil Alejandro Pinarok, Program Head, Biology Department, College of Arts & Sciences; Ms. Esther R. Bañar, Asst. R&D Director and Mr. Mark Bency M. Elpedes, School Nurse.
